In order to improve the health of patients and the population and align with the trajectory towards value-based initiatives and payment structures, physicians and other providers need to expand and reorient their mental paradigms to also incorporate upstream – social and environmental – factors into their understanding, practice, and treatment. This series will address key upstream health issues currently affecting the Greater Houston population. The first topic in this series is mental health.
